Dehradun, July 20: Heavy precipitation across Uttarakhand triggered a temporary halt to the Char Dham Yatra, with state officials citing safety concerns, road blockages, and active weather advisories as primary drivers for the suspension.
Local administrative units placed disaster response divisions on heightened alert as conditions created fog and continuous rainfall across mountain terrain. Surging river currents caused water levels along the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers to border warning levels, flooding riverbank infrastructure and Namami Gange project sites in Rudraprayag. Monitoring posts registered water marks at 799.90 metres in Ganganagar and 1,974.12 metres in Gaurikund.
Addressing safety protocols, Garhwal Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey directed District Magistrates across the division to coordinate transit holding facilities.
“The safety of pilgrims remains the highest priority,” Garhwal Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey declared, adding that operations will resume once weather patterns normalize and transit passages undergo structural inspection.
District authorities instructed travelers and local populations to avoid riverfront zones. Officials emphasized relying solely on official bulletins while transit corridors undergo safety evaluations.
