Ranchi, August 5: Devastating lightning strikes triggered by heavy afternoon rains killed at least 18 workers and injured nine others across rural Jharkhand, turning seasonal farming work into tragedy. Local authorities confirmed that the majority of casualties occurred when workers were caught completely exposed in open agricultural tracts during intense two-to-three-hour rain spells. District reports listed fatalities spanning Garhwa, Chatra, Palamu, Dumka, and Latehar, with Giridih bearing the highest death toll.
While downpours brought down temperatures, weather stations across the state recorded substantial rainfall totals, including 23 mm in Simdega, 12 mm in Bokaro, and 10 mm in Medininagar. Officials stated that injured citizens are receiving active hospital care following emergency rescues. The India Meteorological Department asserted that severe atmospheric instability will remain prevalent over the coming days, issuing heavy rainfall and lightning warnings through August 8 for Garhwa, Palamu, Deoghar, Dumka, East Singhbhum, and surrounding districts. Authorities maintained that farm workers should avoid open fields during thunderstorm alerts to prevent further loss of life.
