NEW DELHI, AUGUST 14: Top national figures and Union Cabinet ministers gathered virtually and through formal statements to observe Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, remembering the millions who lost their lives or were displaced during the 1947 division of India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the national tribute alongside Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
Addressing the historical human toll, Prime Minister Modi asserted that the courage shown by affected communities remains a testament to human fortitude.
May this day deepen our resolve to preserve harmony and brotherhood in our nation, the Prime Minister stated, adding that citizens must transform the memory of past struggles into a shared commitment toward national development.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah characterized the 1947 partition as a brutal period in history, while External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid homage to survivors who started over despite unimaginable hardship. Senior state leadership, including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, maintained that the historical tragedy went far beyond drawn borders, deeply impacting relationships and local communities.
Observed every year on August 14 since its official institution by the Centre in 2021, the remembrance day honors those affected by one of the largest mass migrations in modern history. Federal officials reiterated that preserving the memory of these sacrifices strengthens the foundation of national integration and social cohesion.
