CHANDIGARH — Escalating their opposition to recent security measures outside the state legislature, Congress leaders submitted a petition to Governor Prof Ashim Kumar Ghosh seeking an inquiry into the alleged mistreatment of elected representatives. The delegation, headed by Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda, raised concerns regarding police conduct during a demonstration organized on August 27.
According to the opposition, state legislators were marching peacefully toward the Assembly building to highlight governance issues, including rising crime rates, youth unemployment, and price increases. The delegation maintained that heavy police barricading and the subsequent pushback by security staff disrupted a traditional, democratic form of protest. The party noted that carrying placards and raising slogans at the entrance remain standard democratic practices within legislative bodies.
The memorandum further stated that concerns raised on the floor of the House yielded no formal acknowledgment or responsibility from Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini or Speaker Harvinder Kalyan. Asserting that visual records verify the peaceful nature of their march, Congress leaders declared that governmental authorities utilized security forces to stifle legislative voices, appealing to the Governor for swift institutional review.
