Ottawa Trade Talks Step Up India-Canada Trade Ambitions

Broad economic partnership on track for 2026 conclusion after successful third round

by TheReportingTimes

Ottawa, July 12: Bilateral trade negotiations between India and Canada have advanced significantly following the conclusion of the third round of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement talks in Ottawa. The discussions, which wrapped up on July 10, saw both governments reaffirm their pledge to finalize the historic economic framework by the end of 2026.

The acceleration of the trade timeline comes as both capitals prioritize the diversification of their international commercial partnerships to insulate against global supply chain disruptions. A finalized agreement will establish a robust, formal framework designed to scale up bilateral commerce and investment flows, building upon a two-way goods trade that currently stands at approximately CAD 10 billion.

The scope of the proposed agreement covers wide-ranging modern economic areas, including digital trade, investment, government procurement, and sustainable development, alongside standard market access for goods. Officials focused heavily on resolving rules of origin and service trade guidelines, while identifying mutual growth opportunities in critical minerals, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and clean technology.

For the Canadian government, securing the deal cements its footprint in a vital market under its Indo-Pacific strategy, where India already ranks as its tenth-largest trading partner. For New Delhi, the pact represents another major milestone in its recent trade offensive, following successfully implemented agreements with Australia, the UAE, and the EFTA bloc.

“The push to conclude the economic partnership this year reflects the shared vision of both leaderships,” a trade official asserted during a briefing on the Ottawa session. “Progress across the negotiating tracks shows strong momentum heading into the final phases.”

With the technical groundwork showing steady momentum, both delegations are now preparing for high-level ministerial meetings later this year to address the remaining components of the pact, ahead of the mandatory legal vetting and ratification procedures.
