Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, September 1: The Municipal Corporation of Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar has stepped up its efforts to keep Mohali clean with the launch of the second phase of the Punjab government’s ‘Mission Clean Punjab’ campaign.
The campaign was formally launched at Sector 74-A (Bariali) on Airport Road by constituency MLA Kulwant Singh in the presence of Mayor Sarabjit Singh Samana and Municipal Corporation Commissioner Sandeep Singh Garha.
The eight-day intensive drive will focus on identified garbage-prone locations, particularly important entry and exit points of the city. According to the civic authorities, the exercise will subsequently continue on a regular basis to ensure that the gains made during the special drive are sustained.
Kulwant Singh said the government’s cleanliness initiative could succeed only with active participation from residents. He called upon citizens to take responsibility for keeping public spaces clean and cooperate with the Municipal Corporation in preventing illegal dumping.
The MLA said the civic administration was using CCTV cameras to identify people dumping garbage at public places. Those violating cleanliness norms would face challans and, where required, legal action, he said.
He pointed out that garbage being dumped in open spaces by individuals was not only affecting the city’s appearance but also undermining efforts by the civic authorities. Residents were urged to report such practices and assist the administration in identifying offenders.
Kulwant Singh further stressed the importance of waste segregation at source. He appealed to residents to separate wet and dry waste and hand it over through the Municipal Corporation’s designated disposal arrangements.
He said approximately 20 to 25 locations had been identified in the area where special cleanliness operations would be carried out as part of the campaign.
Mayor Sarabjit Singh Samana said cleanliness and preservation of Mohali’s appearance were among the Municipal Corporation’s key priorities. He said the campaign had been launched from Sector 74-A because of its strategic location on Airport Road and its importance as a gateway to the city.
Samana said cleanliness operations had been underway in Mohali for several months and the second phase of ‘Mission Clean Punjab’ would give fresh impetus to these efforts. Special focus would be placed on removing accumulated garbage from major entry points and other identified sites, he added.
The launch was attended by Senior Deputy Mayor Rajinder Prasad Sharma, Deputy Mayor Harpal Singh Channa, councillors Parminder Kaur Bariali, Gurpreet Singh Bariali, Jaspal Singh Mataur, Akwinder Singh Gosal, Amarjit Singh Sidhu, Naresh Batta and Harmesh Singh Kumbara, along with Municipal Corporation officials and other dignitaries.
