Space agency rebounds with 107th Sriharikota launch, opening new frontiers in real-time strategic monitoring

SRIHARIKOTA: The Indian Space Research Organisation registered its maiden space success of 2026 on Friday as the GSLV F17 launch vehicle flawlessly delivered the state-of-the-art EOS-05 earth observation satellite into orbit. The 420.5-tonne rocket embarked on its 19th mission from the second launch pad at 2.55 AM, piercing the night sky to deposit the advanced 2,367 kg spacecraft into a sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit. The successful execution marks Sriharikota’s 107th space launch and validates years of systematic upgrades to the heavy-lift vehicle’s cryogenic and propulsion capabilities.

 

Equipped with complex multi-band capabilities, the EOS-05 is designed to operate from a stationary vantage point roughly 36,000 km above the Earth’s surface. While traditional observation platforms orbit at lower altitudes with limited coverage windows, the high-altitude geo-orbit placement enables uninterrupted surveillance over the region. Officials stated that the satellite will deliver crucial real-time imagery to support agricultural planning, environmental tracking, and emergency response during natural disasters, while providing vital strategic data for national requirements.

 

Announcing the mission outcome, ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan declared that the satellite’s health remains completely normal following solar array deployment. He noted that the accomplishment reflects seamless teamwork between space scientists and domestic industrial partners. Mission Director Thomas Kurien maintained that the uniquely configured payload is the heaviest ever placed into a transfer orbit by a GSLV, while Project Director Imteyaz Ahamad affirmed that upcoming orbit-raising operations will gradually elevate the spacecraft to its final operational slot.

 

The flawless flight brings welcome relief to the space agency after a prolonged gap in launch operations. Following the technical anomaly encountered during the PSLV C62 flight earlier this year, the triumph restores momentum to India’s space schedule. Space experts declared that overcoming the technical memory of the 2021 GSLV F10 flight failure reinforces confidence in the launch vehicle, establishing a solid foundation for upcoming satellite deployments planned on the national schedule.
