Court Upholds Security Basis for Retention of Chandigarh Accommodation by Ex-CM Family

Judges rule Supreme Court directives do not override specialized threat assessments

CHANDIGARH, OCT 9: The Punjab and Haryana High Court upheld the Chandigarh Administration’s decision permitting Tej Parkash Singh to remain in his government-allotted house, rejecting an application that sought to enforce an earlier cancellation order.

The bench observed that the case stands apart from standard housing recovery matters because municipal authorities acted on expert security evaluations.

State representatives submitted documents showing that official joint committees found the residence strategically suitable to mitigate continuing threat factors.

The court noted that while Supreme Court rulings prevent retired public officials from holding over in government housing indefinitely, those directions do not preclude accommodation decisions based on verified intelligence.

Officials maintained that threat assessments, taking into account persistent risks linked to former Chief Minister Beant Singh’s assassination, justified the current residential arrangements. The bench concluded that the application lacked legal merit given the specific security context established by regional law enforcement bodies.
