Oregon, Oct 16: A gunman’s violent intrusion at Silver Rail Elementary School ended in tragedy on Thursday, leaving four victims dead and two others in critical condition despite a swift intervention that halted the attack.

The 16-year-old assailant gained entrance into the elementary campus by shooting through secured entrance doors with a shotgun originally purchased by his mother. Officers entering the building discovered the shooter dead on the scene shortly after a brave bystander tracked the attacker inside and engaged him.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz affirmed the timeline of events during a news briefing, explaining that the emergency response was triggered after a driver outside the school reported being targeted with a firearm. Emergency personnel descended on the campus within minutes as internal distress calls reached dispatchers.

The violence claimed the lives of three children—aged 5, 8, and 11—as well as an educator. A second teacher and a 7-year-old child were transported in critical condition to receive urgent medical care.

Addressing the state following the horrific incident, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek acknowledged the profound impact on families while honoring the extraordinary bravery demonstrated during the crisis.

“To the community member who heroically intervened to stop further loss of life: Your actions carry a heavy emotional burden, and I just want you to know that my thoughts are with you as well,” Kotek asserted.

Following the containment of the scene, authorities assisted distraught parents and guardians with reunification procedures throughout the evening, while investigators continued examining the circumstances surrounding the gunman’s actions.
