Chandigarh, 26 December 2024 – Chandigarh’s mayoral elections will take place in January 2025, bringing incumbent Mayor Kuldeep Kumar Dhalor’s term to an early end, contrary to earlier expectations of serving until February. Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav confirmed the development, citing the Municipal Corporation Act.
Dhalor assumed office in February following a Supreme Court ruling that resolved a ballot tampering dispute. Though many anticipated his tenure to last until February, political parties called for adherence to the Act, which mandates annual elections in January. Legal opinions clarified that the Supreme Court did not mandate a specific election date, solidifying the January schedule.
Deputy Commissioner Yadav stated, “The Municipal Corporation Act requires elections in January, and a date will be announced soon.” This year’s rotation system designates the post for a woman candidate, marking a significant milestone for the city.
Earlier, AAP co-incharge SS Ahluwalia argued the Supreme Court’s verdict provided a one-year term, warning, “If the elections happen before February 20, we will challenge this legally.”
The INDIA bloc, comprising AAP and Congress, is strategizing to retain control of the 35-member corporation with its majority of 21 votes. This includes 13 votes from AAP, seven from Congress, and one from MP Manish Tewari. The BJP, holding 15 votes, is hoping for cross-party support to influence the outcome.
While AAP and Congress collaborate, internal deliberations persist. Congress president HS Lucky stated, “We aim to select a capable and experienced candidate, not merely based on party allegiance.”
In his final House address, Dhalor reflected on his term, saying, “As the New Year approaches, this could be my last House session. I’m grateful for the support over the past year.” If the January elections proceed as planned, his tenure will conclude next month.
