13 January 2025- External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has emphasized India’s growing global stature and its ability to provide meaningful assistance in challenging times. Addressing the Indian diaspora during his visit to Spain, Jaishankar said that India-Spain relations are on the cusp of significant progress.
Speaking about his engagement with Spain’s diplomatic community, Jaishankar shared that he was invited by the Spanish Foreign Minister to address the country’s ambassadors at a global conference. He said this happened for the first time.
Referring to India’s growing influence, he said that ‘when a foreign ministry or ambassador asks you to come and talk to them, it is a matter of thinking why this is happening.’

Referring to the new India, the External Affairs Minister said that we are known globally for economic strength and leadership. He said, ‘Today we are the fifth largest economy, which is moving towards becoming the third largest.’
Jaishankar said that India is seen as a contributor to global conversations today. He said, ‘There are very few countries that can talk to Russia as well as Ukraine. PM Modi went to Russia as well as Ukraine. Very few countries can talk to both Iran and Israel.’
Jaishankar said that ‘PM Modi can do this. We are part of the Quad as well as BRICS.’ Jaishankar mentioned India’s efforts in advocating the inclusion of Africa in the G-20 and mentioned India’s role during the Covid-19 pandemic.
He said, ‘If you go to the world, there are 100 countries that say that if we got our vaccine, it was because of India. I remember President Sanchez calling PM Modi for the supply of hydroxychloroquine.’
The Foreign Minister said that ‘in difficult times, India is the only country which is ready to talk to different parties and help them. Here it is not a matter of money or resources, it is a matter of heart and mind, of being reliable as a bridge.’
