CHENNAI, JULY 30 — A local investigation led to the arrest of a 22-year-old worker in Chennai’s Kilpauk area after police recovered a deceased newborn baby from a garbage bin on Thyagappa Street. Officers traced the suspect by analyzing street surveillance footage that captured the early morning disposal of a plastic sack containing the infant.
Detectives noted that the woman had concealed her pregnancy since late last year and delivered the child unattended in a residential bathroom.
“The suspect allegedly acted out of fear that the infant’s cries would reveal the secret birth to household members and neighbors,” maintained police officials examining the incident details.
Following the initial arrest, police expanded the scope of the inquiry to determine whether associates or acquaintances had played any role in facilitating or concealing the events. Statements are currently being recorded from three women and one man as forensic examinations continue at the government hospital.
