New Delhi, March 31 — The Supreme Court will on Tuesday hear podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia’s plea challenging multiple FIRs filed against him over his controversial comment on parents and sex during comedian Samay Raina’s YouTube show India’s Got Latent.
The petition is listed before a Bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice N Kotiswar Singh, which had on March 3 permitted Allahbadia to resume his YouTube show The Ranveer Show after he undertook to maintain “morality and decency” and avoid profane language.
The court extended the interim protection from arrest granted to him on February 18 until further orders but clarified that his show should not influence the sub-judice cases.
The Bench had also directed the government to draft a regulatory mechanism for social media content and invite public suggestions, noting the lack of legislative oversight on the issue.
Allahbadia’s remarks on India’s Got Latent had sparked outrage, resulting in multiple FIRs against him in Maharashtra, Assam, and Rajasthan. The top court, while shielding him from arrest, had pulled him up for his “condemnable” and “irresponsible” comments, stating that his words reflected a “dirty mindset” and disrespected parents.
The Bench had indicated that if the government failed to act on regulating online content, it would step in.
