Moga, Oct 30: The district administration of Moga has launched a comprehensive two-day scientific exhibition to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of Dr Narinder Singh Kapany, world-renowned as the Father of Fibre Optics.
Dr Kapany, who was born in Moga on October 31, 1926, earned global acclaim for his foundational efforts in guiding light through flexible fibers, revolutionizing modern communication networks prior to his passing in December 2020. Officials stated that Deputy Commissioner Sagar Setia and Additional Deputy Commissioner Jaspinder Singh Bhullar devised the centenary event to celebrate his deep connection to the region while building dynamic platforms for aspiring student researchers.
Taking place at Sacred Heart School, the district-wide program revolves around the central theme “Science Beyond Boundaries — From Light to Life, Earth to Space.” Students from schools across Moga are participating in displays spanning six core fields, including light transmission, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and space exploration.
Visitors will have access to the Kapany Memorial Gallery, an archival installation capturing his early upbringing, connection to Moga, and breakthroughs in optical research. The itinerary features active prototypes, live scientific experiments, and technical presentations led by faculty from Guru Nanak Dev University as well as the Munjal Birmingham City University Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
District officials maintained that the commemoration will serve as the launchpad for ongoing educational programs. Future endeavors include a dedicated public library bearing Dr Kapany’s name and an annual district-wide science trophy, while the current proceedings wrap up with the conferral of the inaugural Dr Kapany Young Innovator Award.
