NEW DELHI, AUGUST 9: The unwavering determination of Indians to break free from British rule was recalled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the nation commemorated the eighty-fourth anniversary of the Quit India Movement. The Prime Minister declared that the spirit shown by freedom fighters during the 1942 campaign continues to guide and energize the country today.
Describing the movement as a defining chapter in India’s journey toward sovereignty, the Prime Minister stated that the clarion call raised during that period reinvigorated the entire freedom struggle. He noted that the bravery exhibited by the leaders and ordinary citizens alike reflected the collective resolve of the people.
The historic movement originated in Bombay following the passage of the Quit India resolution on August 8, 1942. The subsequent morning saw Mahatma Gandhi deliver his historic message urging the masses toward decisive action for independence.
Although colonial authorities moved swiftly to detain top leaders and suppress public gatherings, the movement gained unstoppable momentum. Demonstrations swept across multiple regions, demonstrating a unified stand that ultimately paved the way for India’s freedom.
