Native Fish Seeds Released in Sukhna Lake

Department targets ecological balance through indigenous species stocking

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, April 23: Efforts to restore the biological equilibrium of Sukhna Lake moved forward Tuesday with the introduction of 10,000 native fish seeds. The UT Department of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries selected indigenous carp, including catla, mrigal, and rohu, to improve water quality and bolster the food supply for the upcoming winter season.

The strategic intervention serves a dual purpose by purifying the water and providing a sustainable food source for migratory birds. Director of Fisheries, Naveen, asserted that regular stocking programs are vital for the lake, as natural fish reproduction is currently insufficient to sustain the necessary biological levels.

Pardeep Kumar, Secretary of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, noted that the initiative marks a transition toward prioritizing the lake’s role as a biological sanctuary. He maintained that the preservation of aquatic biodiversity is a critical factor in the long-term vitality of the site.

The department collaborated with Panjab University specialists to ensure the species chosen would thrive in the local environment. Following these recommendations, staff utilized multiple entry points around the lake for the release. Joint Director Ashwani Kumar stated that this method ensures the seeds are spread effectively throughout the ecosystem.

While the project focuses on conservation, the administration continues to manage the lake as a multi-use space. Ashwani Kumar affirmed that controlled angling persists at designated spots, allowing for public engagement under strict oversight. Officials declared that such proactive measures are necessary to sustain the lake’s ecological role as a major urban landmark and a haven for wildlife.
