WASHINGTON, APRIL 27 — A California man is in federal custody after opening fire outside the ballroom of the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner late Saturday. The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, allegedly targeted the event where President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and members of the Cabinet were in attendance.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation declared that the suspect was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives. Agents stated that the shooter was stopped near a security checkpoint as he attempted to breach the lobby area. While the president was unharmed, a law enforcement officer was shot at close range; however, officials maintained that the officer’s protective gear prevented serious injury.

President Trump affirmed the severity of the encounter, stating that the assailant appeared to be a “lone wolf.” He declared that the country requires “levels of security that probably nobody has ever seen before” in light of the incident. The president stated that his family had received warnings from law enforcement in other states regarding the suspect’s potential movements prior to the attack.

In a statement following the evacuation, FBI Director Kash Patel affirmed that the Washington field office is leading a comprehensive probe into the suspect’s background as a former teacher and game developer. Investigators stated that the suspect had traveled to the capital by train and was staying as a guest at the hotel where the dinner was held.

“When there is an emergency, we run to the crisis, not away from it,” stated WHCA President Weijia Jiang as she announced the event’s suspension. Lawmakers from across the political spectrum affirmed their support for the Secret Service’s actions, with many stating that the recurring nature of such political violence is a grave concern for the nation.
