Rohtak, July 14: A district-wide reading programme has been introduced in Rohtak government primary schools to cultivate independent thinking and boost language skills. The daily fifteen-minute reading challenge requires teachers to transform classrooms into quiet reading spaces immediately following the zero period, allowing children to explore books under direct supervision.
The project builds upon previous administration efforts, specifically succeeding Project Vishwas, to elevate the overall quality of public education. Students are being encouraged to explore a diverse range of reading materials, including children’s literature, biographies, and daily newspapers available in specialized classroom corners.
“The programme has been designed in line with the vision of the National Education Policy 2020 and the NIPUN Bharat Mission, which place foundational literacy at the centre of school education reforms,” Sachin Gupta, Deputy Commissioner, affirmed. The DC maintained that true education must focus on developing articulate, responsible citizens who can adapt to a changing world.
Recent data from the district’s Digital Skill Passbook and Competency Review Programme influenced the rollout of this challenge. While early elementary students have made positive strides in phonemic awareness, number recognition, and cognitive development, administration reviews indicated that reading comprehension requires targeted attention.
“The assessment revealed that while students have shown encouraging progress in foundational literacy and numeracy, a significant number continue to face difficulty in reading unseen passages, comprehending their meaning and answering questions based on the text,” Gupta declared.
To resolve these exact comprehension issues, the daily reading sessions will focus heavily on helping students decipher unfamiliar words and complex concepts. Educators are expected to actively assist students during the fifteen-minute window, ensuring that the process remains joyful yet highly instructional.
“Every innovation introduced by the district administration is aimed at making our government schools centres of excellence,” the DC added. In tandem with the literacy drive, officials received directives to enhance the quality of the PM POSHAN Scheme through rigorous mid-day meal inspections, while also incorporating experiential learning and educational excursions into the standard curriculum.
