Chandigarh, April 21: To elevate the standard of hockey in Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has invited Dutch legend Floris Jan Bovelander to the state for a series of motivational and technical engagements. The meeting, held on Tuesday, focused on utilizing Bovelander’s global expertise to benefit the next generation of Punjabi players.
The Chief Minister asserted that the state and the sport of hockey are inseparable, pointing to legendary villages like Sansarpur and Mithapur which have produced dozens of Olympians. He stated that the government is determined to build on the momentum generated by the Indian team’s recent bronze medals in Tokyo and Paris, both of which featured a strong Punjabi contingent.
“Punjab is committed to nurturing sporting talent and taking hockey to new heights,” the Chief Minister maintained. He declared that it is a matter of pride that the state will host the Asian Champions Trophy for the first time in its history following the conclusion of the Asian Games in October.
During the discussion, the Chief Minister stated that the inclusion of ten Punjabi players in the recent Olympic squad, led by captain and top scorer Harmanpreet Singh, highlights the state’s vital role in the national team. He declared that the arrival of Bovelander will provide the necessary international exposure to help local talent compete at the highest level. The Chief Minister affirmed that the government’s priority remains the creation of a sustainable and world-class sporting culture in Punjab.
