Punjab Overhauls Licensing System to Curb Malpractice

New AI-powered test tracks to offer same-day delivery of driving documents

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, April 24:To eliminate corruption and improve road safety, the Punjab government is rolling out an AI-based evaluation process across all 32 of its automated driving test centers. The initiative seeks to replace manual testing with an automated system that delivers a pass or fail result instantly, allowing applicants who qualify to walk out with their driving licences the same day.

The state’s decision follows a vigilance crackdown last year that uncovered widespread irregularities and led to 24 arrests involving private agents and government staff. To prevent future malpractice, the new system uses AI-powered mobile technology to track driver adherence to traffic rules without any human interference. Tenders for the management of these tracks are scheduled to be opened on May 7.

The state transport department affirmed that the revamp will also involve converting all testing centers into RTO Seva Kendras. These hubs will provide one-stop services, including biometric verification and digital helpdesks. Same-day licence delivery and upgraded infrastructure will make the process far more streamlined for the public, an official stated.

The technology has already proven effective in Mohali, where it significantly improved the integrity of the testing process. Department representatives declared that the advanced system ensures only genuinely skilled drivers are granted licences, which is a crucial step toward reducing road accidents. Officials asserted that with the integration of online platforms for tracking and appointments, the entire licensing journey is being modernized to meet growing demand across Punjab.
