Punjab Police Deploy AI Weapon Against Crime

ICCC Grid Enhances Surveillance and Emergency Response Times

Chandigarh, May 13: A new era of digital policing has taken hold in Punjab as the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) begins transforming raw data into criminal leads. Using 1,007 cameras in Jalandhar and an additional 1,700 in Ludhiana, the Punjab Police are now able to filter through thousands of hours of footage in seconds to identify specific attributes like vehicle color or clothing.

The technology proved pivotal in several recent investigations, including a firing incident at a veterinary doctor’s home and the murder of a local political leader. In the latter case, the high-fidelity cameras provided clear visuals of a gunman in a distinctive hoodie, which operators then cross-referenced with digital gang activity monitoring to name primary suspects.

DGP Gaurav Yadav affirmed that the state force is now more capable than ever of foiling crimes before they escalate. He stated that the ICCC provides an “extended arm” to existing operations such as “Operation Parhar,” merging high-tech sensors with traditional patrolling.

The system features automated algorithms designed to detect anomalies, such as abandoned objects or unauthorized crowd formations. Commissioner of Police Dhanpreet Randhawa noted that the ICCC allows for seamless coordination between municipal services and law enforcement in a centralized environment.

“AI has surely made things better, but the important part is to use it in the right manner,” Randhawa asserted. She maintained that the 24-hour monitoring capability ensures that the police have a continuous grip on the city’s security perimeter. The Ludhiana installation also includes an Intelligent Traffic Management System at 46 locations, further broadening the scope of the surveillance grid to include road safety and traffic violations.
