Punjab & UK Leaders Address NRI Property Rights, Air Connectivity, Pilgrimage Access

Dhesi Urges Time-Bound Dispute Resolution as State Promises Stronger Safeguards for Overseas Citizens

Chandigarh, August 22: Discussions between UK Defence Committee Chair Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi and Punjab NRI Affairs Minister Ravjot Singh in Chandigarh highlighted key diaspora priorities, including streamlined legal procedures for land disputes and broader air routes linking Punjab to global capitals.

Addressing long-standing grievances of non-resident Punjabis, Dhesi called for strict timeframes to settle property fraud, land encroachments, and extortion demands facing overseas entrepreneurs and sports promoters. He declared that effective administrative mechanisms must shield international citizens from repeated travel and legal delays while securing their investments within the state.

Air transportation formed another major pillar of the dialogue. Both representatives advocated for expanded direct flights connecting Amritsar and Chandigarh to key international destinations, citing the potential economic windfall for local trade, job creation, and export logistics.

“Better air and cargo connectivity is essential for further strengthening economic ties between Punjab and the Punjabi diaspora living abroad,” Dhesi affirmed, adding that improved air freight capabilities would unlock new agricultural and manufacturing opportunities.

The agenda extended to regional religious diplomacy, with both parties reviewing measures to maintain the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor for seamless pilgrimage access.

“The Punjab Government will continue to take issues concerning overseas Punjabis seriously,” NRI Affairs Minister Ravjot Singh declared, assuring that critical concerns regarding security, property protection, and aviation growth will be taken up at appropriate governmental levels.
