Chandigarh: In an effort to protect Punjab’s drinking and irrigation water supplies, Ropar MLA Dinesh Chadha has called for immediate joint intervention from central and neighboring state authorities to halt the flow of untreated industrial waste into the Sutlej River. The AAP legislator stated that over 600 industrial units in the neighboring BBN zone continue to bypass proper treatment protocols, discharging untreated effluents into local rivulets that feed into the Sirsa and Sutlej rivers.
Detailing legal actions initiated to address the environmental crisis, the MLA stated that the National Green Tribunal has sought formal responses from the governments of Himachal Pradesh and Haryana following his petition. He maintained that inadequate solid waste management facilities and lagging municipal sewage infrastructure in Baddi are exacerbating the environmental damage downstream. Demanding strict regulatory enforcement against non-compliant industrial units, the legislator declared that Punjab’s public health cannot be compromised due to regulatory oversights in upstream industrial hubs.
