Chandigarh, August 23: A probe into an ₹85,000 cyber fraud reported by a Chandigarh resident has led to the arrest of two alleged cybercriminals from Delhi, with police claiming that the accused have also revealed the involvement of a third person.

The arrested suspects have been identified as Manohar, 30, and Ankit Gupta, 20. They were taken into custody after investigators tracked the movement of the allegedly defrauded money through bank accounts and carried out technical and field verification.

Police said ₹45,000 was transferred to a Federal Bank account allegedly associated with Manohar, while another ₹40,000 reached an SBI account allegedly belonging to Gupta. Investigators said the money was later withdrawn through an ATM.

The fraud came to light after the Chandigarh resident approached the Cybercrime Police Station, following the unauthorised debit of ₹85,000 from his ICICI Bank account linked to UPI. The FIR was registered on May 8.

Investigators suspect that the victim’s mobile phone was compromised after he installed an APK file allegedly sent by the fraudster. Police said the installation provided the means for the fraudulent transactions.

Based on the investigation, a police team travelled to Delhi and conducted a raid, leading to the arrest of the two suspects. Two mobile phones and an ATM card were recovered during the operation, officials said.

Police claimed that questioning of the accused subsequently pointed to another person allegedly connected with the fraud. “The accused allegedly disclosed that another person was also involved in the crime,” officials said.

A court granted the police one-day remand of both accused for further questioning. Following completion of the remand, the two were sent to judicial custody.

The accused have been booked under Sections 318(4), 319(2), 336(3), 338, 340(2) and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, covering offences including cheating, personation, forgery, forged electronic records and criminal conspiracy.
