PHAGWARA, OCT 2 — Police authorities have initiated significant arrests following incidents of rioting, public property destruction, and traffic disruption that affected the Lovely Professional University campus and nearby transit routes late last month.
Addressing reporters alongside Kapurthala SSP Gaurav Toora, DIG Naveen Singla affirmed that nine individuals—comprising seven students and two residents from nearby Phagwara—have been detained under first information reports registered at the Satnampura and Phagwara Sadar police stations. The detained students hail from various states, including Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Maharashtra.
The Special Investigation Team formed to examine the violence has deployed multiple specialized units to analyze recorded evidence. Investigators observed that elements operating around the commercial precinct outside the campus participated in torching vehicles, damaging infrastructure, and disrupting traffic on the national highway.
Law enforcement officials declared that all individuals captured on video committing unlawful acts will face legal proceedings, assuring that meticulous verification is being conducted before making further arrests. Court proceedings for the detained suspects have commenced as police continue their broader inquiry into the events.
