AMRITSAR, Juen 21– Punjab Police on Saturday claimed to have dismantled a major cross-border drug smuggling operation with the arrest of two individuals allegedly in direct contact with a Pakistan-based smuggler.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the accused — identified as Lovepreet Singh alias Love and Balwinder Singh alias Bobby — were caught with 6.15 kg of heroin, a .30-bore pistol with four live cartridges, and ₹10,000 in cash.
“Preliminary investigation reveals the accused were in direct contact with a Pakistan-based smuggler via WhatsApp, indicating a strong cross-border nexus,” DGP Yadav said in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The arrests were made in the Lopoke area of Amritsar district, where a case has been registered at the local police station under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act and Arms Act.
Yadav said investigations are ongoing to identify both forward and backward linkages in the smuggling network, which is believed to operate across state and international borders.
“This is part of our continued offensive against the drug mafia. We remain committed to dismantling such networks and ensuring Punjab is free of drugs,” Yadav added.
Police sources said digital devices recovered from the accused will be sent for forensic examination to further map their communication trail and identify their handlers across the border.
