Mother, Infant Killed in Industrial Fire Triggered by Gas Cylinder Blast

by TheReportingTimes

MOHALI, July 1 — A nine-month-old baby girl and her mother died in a devastating fire triggered by a gas cylinder explosion at a tool-manufacturing unit in the Industrial Area here on Monday morning. Two other men, including the unit’s owner, were injured in the incident.

The tragedy occurred around 9:30 a.m. in Phase 5, near Shahimajra, when a portable LPG cylinder exploded inside the pantry cabin of the unit. The victims were identified as Babita, a helper at the factory, and her infant daughter Dhimanshi. According to officials, Babita was preparing tea for staff when the blast occurred. Her daughter was lying on a bed nearby.

“The fire engulfed the entire structure almost immediately after the explosion, causing panic and chaos,” said Sub Fire Officer Suresh Kumar. “Another cylinder used for welding was also present inside the building, increasing the danger.”

Emergency responders rushed to the scene and battled the flames. Babita was pulled out with serious burn injuries but later succumbed during treatment at PGIMER. The toddler’s charred body was recovered only after the blaze was completely extinguished.

The unit’s owner, Varinder Kumar, and an employee, Sandeep, also suffered injuries. While Sandeep is undergoing treatment at the Phase 6 Civil Hospital, Varinder’s condition is reported to be critical.

Police officers inspecting the site found the remains of the pantry cabin with scattered household items, a stove, and a bed — signs that it was being used as temporary accommodation. Investigators also discovered loose electrical wiring throughout the unit, indicating possible safety violations.

Authorities have launched a probe to determine whether the unit had the necessary fire clearances and whether any negligence contributed to the explosion and subsequent fatalities.

“We are looking into all possible causes and lapses,” a police official said. “The priority now is to ensure such a tragedy is not repeated.”

The fire and resulting casualties have shocked the local industrial community, with many expressing concerns over lax safety standards in small manufacturing units operating in densely built-up areas.
