Mother, Wife Held for Smuggling Heroin into Faridkot Jail

Faridkot, July 23: A woman and her daughter-in-law were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly attempting to smuggle heroin into Faridkot Central Jail, concealed inside clothes meant for an inmate.

According to jail officials, Charanjit Kaur and Veerpal Kaur — mother and wife of prisoner Harpreet Singh — were caught with 35 grams of heroin hidden in garments they had brought for him. Both women are residents of Bilaspur village in Moga district.

Harpreet Singh, who is currently lodged in Faridkot Central Jail, had been temporarily transferred from Moga for a court appearance. The drugs were discovered during a routine inspection of the clothes at the jail gate, officials said.

“As per procedure, all items brought by visitors are scanned and manually inspected. During the check, suspicious material was found stitched into the clothing,” said Karamjit Singh Bhullar, Assistant Superintendent, who led the search and seizure operation.

The heroin was immediately seized and the authorities informed. A case under Sections 21(B), 61, and 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered against the two women. They were taken into custody on the spot.

Further investigation is underway to trace the source of the contraband and determine if others were involved in the attempted smuggling. Jail authorities have also stepped up surveillance following the incident.
