Shreyas stable, to miss action for two months: BCCI

New Delhi, Nov 1: India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been declared out of action for at least two months after suffering a spleen laceration and rib cage injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. The BCCI on Saturday confirmed that Iyer underwent a minor procedure and has now been discharged from the hospital.

“The 30-year-old is stable and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are satisfied with his recovery, and he has been discharged from the hospital today,” the board said in an official statement.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia detailed the extent of the injury, stating, “Shreyas Iyer sustained a blunt injury to his abdomen while fielding during the third ODI on October 25, which caused a laceration of his spleen with internal bleeding. The bleeding was immediately arrested after a minor procedure, and he has received appropriate medical care.”

Iyer was injured while attempting a difficult catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. Following the incident, he was taken to a local medical facility where scans confirmed the internal injury.

Saikia further mentioned that Iyer will continue to remain in Sydney for follow-up consultations before returning to India when he is fit to travel. “The BCCI extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr Kouroush Haghigi and his team in Sydney, and Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for providing the best possible medical care,” he said.

The injury comes as a setback for India’s middle-order plans ahead of the home season. Iyer is expected to resume training only after complete recovery and medical clearance.
