CHANDIGARH, 10 Nov — The Punjab government is preparing a special felicitation for three players from the state who helped India clinch its first Women’s T20 World Cup title, with each expected to receive ₹1.5 crore in cash rewards, officials said Monday.
The players — Harmanpreet Kaur, Harleen Deol, and Amanjot Kaur — will be honoured in a state ceremony once Harmanpreet returns to Punjab. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is expected to meet them personally.
While Harleen and Amanjot are likely to be offered government jobs, officials clarified that Harmanpreet Kaur, who is also a DSP in Punjab Police, will not get an immediate promotion. “Her next promotion to SP is not due yet, as she joined the force earlier this year,” said an official, adding that her case will be reviewed later.
The government is exploring other ways to honour the Indian skipper, who led the team to a historic victory against South Africa in the T20 World Cup final at the DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai.
Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and MP Meet Hayer said all formalities for the awards have been completed and the announcement will follow soon.
Harmanpreet’s police service had earlier been clouded by controversy after her 2018 appointment as DSP was withdrawn over the validity of her graduation degree. She was demoted to constable before completing a new degree through Lovely Professional University and was reinstated as DSP in 2024.
The state government had earlier rewarded nine hockey players with Punjab Civil Services posts after their Olympic bronze in 2024 — a move likely to be mirrored in the case of the women cricketers.
