Seechewal Seeks Name Change for National Observance Honouring Sahibzades

NEW DELHI, Dec. 10 — Rajya Sabha MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to amend the title of “Veer Bal Diwas,” arguing that the observance should carry a name aligned with Sikh faith and tradition.

In his communication, Seechewal proposed that the day be renamed “Sahibzade Shahadat Diwas,” a phrase he said more accurately captures the “sacred and solemn nature” of the martyrdom of Sri Guru Gobind Singh’s four sons.

“The government’s step to recognise the Sahibzades’ sacrifice at the national level is deeply appreciated,” Seechewal wrote. “But the name must reflect the spiritual sentiment of the Sikh community.”

He said Sikh organisations had recently petitioned Sri Akal Takht Sahib to revisit the nomenclature, prompting the highest Sikh temporal authority to advise Punjab MPs to convey the concern directly to the Centre.

The MP urged the Prime Minister to implement the change ahead of this year’s observance, saying the community views the Sahibzades’ martyrdom as a central pillar of Sikh history. He expressed hope the government would “honour the collective sentiment of the Sikhs” by adopting the revised name.
