Faridabad, Feb 8: Faridabad police have arrested a swing operator and a staff member following a tragic ride collapse at the Surajkund International Crafts Mela that claimed the life of an on-duty police officer. Mohammad Shakir, owner of Himachal Fun Care, and his employee Nitesh were taken into custody by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Sunday.
The accident occurred Saturday evening when a “Tsunami” swing ride malfunctioned while in motion. Inspector Jagdish Prasad, 58, died during a rescue attempt when a portion of the structure fell on him. Twelve others, including several police personnel, sustained injuries and are currently in stable condition.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has directed officials to implement a rigorous review of safety protocols at all public events. He noted that the government stands firmly with the families of the victims. “Those seriously injured in the accident will receive financial assistance of ₹1 lakh each from the state government,” the CM mentioned during a briefing.
DGP Ajay Singhal and Police Commissioner Satendra Kumar Gupta met with the bereaved family on Sunday to offer condolences. The DGP stated that Inspector Prasad would be accorded martyr status, with his family receiving ₹1 crore in compensation and a government job for an eligible member.
“Inspector Jagdish Prasad made a commendable effort to rescue the injured while on duty. His death is a profound tragedy for the police department,” Singhal said. He noted that the officer’s bravery saved lives before the structure completely gave way.
