Relief for Guru Randhawa in Lyrics Case

High Court halts Samrala court action citing lack of primary evidence

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, March 22: Singer Guru Randhawa has secured a stay from the Punjab and Haryana High Court regarding a criminal case centered on his track “Sirra.” Justice Surya Pratap Singh directed that all trial court activities remain suspended until July 16, noting that the initial notice was sent to the singer without the legal prerequisite of documented evidence.

The dispute stems from allegations that the song’s lyrics were derogatory toward the Jat-Sikh community and desecrated specific religious practices. In response to the Samrala court’s earlier orders, Randhawa filed a petition for the quashing of the case.

Attorneys representing the singer, Tarushi Monga and Tejeshwar Singh, argued that the lower court bypassed essential procedural steps. They noted that the law demands a foundation of evidence before a magistrate can formally summon an individual in such matters.

The legal representatives also stated that their client intends to cooperate with concerns regarding the song’s impact. They declared that the singer has already provided assurances to modify or remove the disputed content from various digital streaming services to resolve the friction.

“The singer had no ulterior motive and had already shown good faith by assuring that he would remove or modify the content,” the counsel affirmed.

The High Court’s decision to pause the trial ensures that the procedural validity of the lower court’s notice will be examined before any further criminal steps are taken.
