Himachal, Punjab CMs to meet over tax row

BJP MLA warns of potential road blocks as new rates take effect

Shimla/Chandigarh, March 31: A high-level meeting between the Chief Ministers of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab is expected to take place following a surge in tensions over a controversial hike in entry taxes for out-of-state vehicles. The dispute has reached a critical point, with various groups in Punjab warning of a complete blockade of interstate traffic starting April 1.

The controversy stems from the Himachal government’s decision to increase toll fees at major entry barriers, a move that critics say will heavily burden daily commuters and the tourism industry. During a heated legislative session, opposition members asserted that the decision has already sparked unrest among Punjab residents who share a close economic link with Himachal’s border towns.

BJP legislator Randhir Sharma stated that the timing of the tax implementation has created an immediate risk of confrontation.

“The law and order situation could deteriorate from tomorrow as the new entry tax rates will come into effect starting today midnight,” Sharma declared while seeking a response from the government.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has indicated a willingness to discuss the specific objections raised by the Punjab government. While the state government has maintained that it is within its rights to mobilise resources, the threat of reciprocal taxation from Punjab has prompted a reconsideration of how the policy affects border-area residents.

Security has been tightened at key transit points such as Baddi, Parwanoo, and Mehatpur. Officials stated that they are working to ensure that the dispute does not disrupt essential supplies or result in violence between protesting groups and commuters.
