LEH, APRIL 27: Ladakh has expanded from two to seven districts following a formal notification by the Lieutenant Governor’s office. The new districts—Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar, and Drass—were approved on Monday, marking what officials described as a transformative step for the Union Territory’s governance.
Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena stated that the creation of these districts is designed to bring the administration closer to the people. He affirmed that the move would allow for more efficient handling of local issues and faster implementation of developmental projects. Saxena declared that the initiative was made possible through the leadership of the Union Home Ministry and reflects the national vision for a developed Ladakh.
“This decision would strengthen grassroots governance and ensure faster delivery of public services,” the Lieutenant Governor asserted. He maintained that the expansion addresses the unique geographical challenges of the territory, where vast distances often complicate administrative access.
The notification arrives as the region prepares for the arrival of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Sources maintained that the creation of the new districts has been a focal point of discussion with local stakeholders for several years. The administration affirmed that the new offices and infrastructure required for these districts will be established to ensure they become fully operational in the near future.
