Trinamool Stares at Defeat as BJP Surges Past 200 Seats

West Bengal assembly trends indicate decisive mandate for change on counting day

Kolkata, May 4: Early afternoon trends showed the party leading in over 200 constituencies, effectively ending the 15-year administration of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress.

The election followed a record-breaking voter turnout of over 92 percent, with the contest narrowing into a polarized fight between the BJP’s promises of development and the TMC’s established welfare model. Suvendu Adhikari, the BJP’s key strategist and candidate in Bhabanipur and Nandigram, maintained that the results were a consequence of a consolidated vote for the opposition. As the BJP moved toward a historic victory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to address party workers later in the evening.

“Early trends show the BJP much ahead of the TMC,” Adhikari affirmed, noting the party’s confidence in forming the next government.

In a significant constitutional development, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sought an appointment with Governor R.N. Ravi as the scale of the defeat became apparent. The shifting numbers suggest the TMC has lost significant ground in its traditional strongholds, while the Left Front and Congress continued to struggle for relevance. Election officials noted that while some rounds of counting remain, the gap between the two primary parties has become nearly insurmountable in the final tally.
