Recruitment for college cadre faces hurdles as candidate pass rates plummet in Haryana

by TheReportingTimes

PANCHKULA, MAY 12 — The latest recruitment results from the Haryana Public Service Commission (HPSC) have highlighted a growing crisis in candidate qualification for academic roles. In the most recent results for Assistant Professor positions in Psychology, the Commission could only find three suitable candidates for 85 vacancies, leaving 82 posts unfilled.

The HPSC maintained that the transition to a descriptive subject knowledge test has exposed significant weaknesses in the academic proficiency of applicants. Records show that in the Computer Science category for Post Graduate Teachers, a staggering 1,711 posts were advertised, yet only 39 candidates managed to qualify. Officials asserted that the difficulty lies not in the syllabus, but in the candidates’ inability to express subject matter effectively in a written format.

The Commission affirmed that the shortfall is consistent across various specialized fields. In the recruitment for Defense Studies, only five candidates were selected for 23 posts, while in Economics, nearly half of the 43 advertised positions remain vacant. The HPSC noted that the results for several of these subjects were communicated to the government earlier this year, highlighting a persistent pattern of under-qualification.

“They are finding it tough,” an official stated, referring to the descriptive nature of the current examination process. While the screening tests initially draw large numbers of applicants, the subject knowledge stage acts as a significant bottleneck. The state government is now facing pressure to address these vacancies, as the shortage of qualified faculty continues to impact the college cadre across Haryana and the Mewat region.
