Punjab Initiates Infrastructure Upgrades in 7 Peripheral Towns

Chandigarh, June 13: The Punjab Government has launched a coordinated infrastructure drive to modernize municipal services and public transit links across the towns bordering the Tricity region. Local Government Minister Harjot Singh Bains directed municipal authorities to expedite essential public works and implement a rigorous monitoring system to track progress.

The infrastructure push spans several urban local bodies, including Zirakpur, Kharar, Derabassi, Kurali, Banur, Nayagaon, and Gharuan, where local teams are updating utility lines and transit routes.

Mr. Bains noted that the current phase of development moves away from superficial maintenance toward building robust, permanent civil structures designed to accommodate regional growth.

“We are monitoring every kilometre of road, every tubewell and every deadline,” Mr. Bains stated, affirming that the department will hold officials directly accountable for any unnecessary scheduling adjustments.

The minister noted that the civic improvements involve the construction of more than 250 kilometers of provincial roads, alongside extensive sanitation maintenance and large-scale sewer desilting. To resolve water accessibility issues, the department finalized plans to set up 50 tubewells distributed strategically across the seven municipalities based on local population density and demand.

The state government issued a 15-day deadline for the commencement of several priority connectivity projects, including the Main Bazaar Road in Kurali, Nada Road in Nayagaon, and the Banur to Jalalpur Road link in Lalru.

The minister stated that the administrative strategy follows a systematic, transparent model designed to deliver public utilities efficiently. He maintained that updating these suburban hubs is essential to support the expanding economic footprint of the greater Tricity peripheral belt.
