New Delhi, June 13: The Ministry of Defence declared on Saturday that Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth has been appointed as the next Chief of the Army Staff. The current Vice Chief of Army is scheduled to assume his new responsibilities at the end of the month, succeeding Gen Upendra Dwivedi upon his retirement on June 30.
The transition brings an officer with nearly four decades of service to the helm of the Indian Army. Lt Gen Seth started his military career in December 1986 upon being commissioned into the Armoured Corps after graduating from the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla. His operational record spans diverse and challenging environments, having previously commanded an Armoured Regiment in the desert, an Armoured Brigade in the Western Theatre, and a dedicated counter-insurgency force operating within Jammu and Kashmir.
In the higher ranks, the officer managed key organizational and operational portfolios. He held the command of the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, which stands as one of the premier strike formations of the Indian Army, before transitioning to the role of General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area. Upon rising to the rank of Army Commander, he achieved the rare distinction of leading two distinct operational arms—the South Western Command and the Southern Command—directing strategic planning across critical theatres for more than two and a half years. Authorities stated that his extensive career has allowed him to hold central staff positions that directly impacted the force management and capability development of the army.
