Fazilka, July 14: The Aam Aadmi Party secured full control of the local civic body in the Jalalabad Assembly segment of Fazilka district on Tuesday as woman councillor Monu Kukkar was unanimously elected president of the Arniwala Nagar Panchayat. The leadership election, which was reserved for women candidates, concluded with the ruling party sweeping all the key leadership positions in the local government framework.
The internal election process also resulted in the selection of two party colleagues, Shiv Kumar Bhalla and Kulwant Kaur, to serve as the vice-presidents of the Nagar Panchayat. Local governing officials declared that the administrative setup follows a successful performance by the party in the recently concluded civic polls, where the Aam Aadmi Party claimed six out of the eleven municipal wards. The remaining seats were distributed among the opposition, with the Shiromani Akali Dal securing four wards and the Congress winning a single ward, while the Bharatiya Janata Party did not manage to win any seats in the local contest.
Following the formal selection process, Jalalabad MLA Jagdeep Goldy Kamboj extended congratulations to the newly appointed team and outlined the upcoming infrastructure agenda for the region. The lawmaker maintained that the administration would immediately focus on a major road reconstruction initiative across the Arniwala sub-tehsil, which carries an estimated budget of eight crore rupees. The street networks had previously sustained extensive damage during the installation of a new subterranean sewerage system.
The administrative priorities also include a substantial allocation of two point five crore rupees dedicated to the complete renovation of the aging village pond, which has fallen into disrepair. The lawmaker asserted that local governance transitions would continue smoothly across the district, noting that the formal elections to fill the president and vice-president seats for the nearby Jalalabad Municipal Council are scheduled to take place within the coming days.
