New Delhi, July 29: Strengthening its legal framework against academic corruption, the Lok Sabha passed key amendments to the anti-paper leak legislation on Wednesday, introducing maximum jail terms of ten years alongside fines reaching Rs 50 lakh.
House proceedings faced persistent disruptions from opposition members raising slogans, prompting the speaker to adjourn the Lok Sabha for the day right after the bill was successfully passed.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh stated during discussions that the administration demonstrated prompt action in response to the NEET controversy. He reported that police registered 52 FIRs across various regions under the 2024 central act.
“The government was open to learning from experience,” Union Minister Jitendra Singh declared while outlining the purpose of the new provisions. He added that preventative measures have successfully reduced student suicide rates linked to test leaks.
The legislative initiative came as a direct development after widespread student agitations spearheaded by the Cockroach Janta Party resulted in Dharmendra Pradhan stepping down from his post as education minister. The proposed changes were subsequently brought to the floor on July 27.
Critiquing opposition leadership, Minister Singh maintained that Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi lacked adequate insight into functioning parliamentary norms and administrative practices.
