PUNJAB EXPANDS PUBLIC TRANSPLANT SERVICES FOLLOWING SURGICAL SUCCESS AT PILBS

by TheReportingTimes

SAS NAGAR (MOHALI) AUGUST 21  — The Punjab Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences in Mohali reached a major surgical benchmark after performing three liver transplants in a single week, bringing its total count to five successful operations.

Addressing journalists, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Balbir Singh stated that the state is actively developing its public health system to deliver advanced care locally so residents do not need to seek specialized treatment outside Punjab.

To scale these services statewide, health authorities are implementing a hub-and-spoke framework where the Mohali center acts as the primary specialized facility, supported by regional medical colleges that will manage early assessments and post-transplant follow-up care.

“Renal transplant services will also begin soon at Mohali and Patiala,” declared Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh, noting that all four state medical colleges are being upgraded to support broader organ donation and transplant ecosystems.

The three recent transplants relied on living donors who stepped forward for immediate family members, including a wife, a mother, and a son.

In addition to expanding surgical programs, the state health department reported that the Mohali institute conducted 239 FibroScans at subsidized rates and provided indoor care to 139 patients during August. Ongoing facility expansions will add 170 beds to accommodate higher patient volumes.

Recognizing the clinical team, Dr Balbir Singh asserted that the accomplishments demonstrate the growing technical expertise and infrastructural readiness of Punjab’s public medical institutions.
