Supreme Court Collegium Pick for Punjab and Haryana HC Chief Justice Awaits State Clearance

Standard Consultative Procedure Underway for Justice Mishra’s Appointment

by TheReportingTimes

NEW DELHI: A month after the Supreme Court Collegium recommended Acting Chief Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra to lead the Punjab and Haryana High Court as its permanent Chief Justice, the final notification remains pending subject to administrative clearance from the Punjab government. The recommendation was made on August 6 by a Collegium panel led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant.

Justice Mishra transferred from the Allahabad High Court in July 2025 and stepped into the role of Acting Chief Justice in June following judicial elevations to the apex court. Under the standard Memorandum of Procedure governing judicial appointments, the Union Ministry of Law and Justice seeks input from the concerned state government prior to finalizing the appointment. Central officials confirmed that the file remains under review with state executive leadership, after which the recommendation will be submitted to the President of India for formal approval.
