Hisar, Sept 22: A social panchayat in Hisar’s Arya Nagar village declared a total ban on same-village marriages and resolved to socially boycott any individuals violating the community’s established marital norms. The decision emerged from a well-attended Sunday gathering, where village representatives and elders labeled such marriages as detrimental to traditional social structures. Under the new resolution, couples marrying within the same village will lose their right to live in the community.
Community representatives maintained that strict measures were required after three local women married youths from the same village. Hanuman Verma, a resident who attended the meeting, asserted that the entire village stood united behind the resolution to prevent setting a wrong precedent. He stated that customary values dictate treating all women born in the village as sisters, reinforcing the idea that same-village unions undermine traditional familial relationships. Verma declared that the meeting was convened after the family of the bride involved in the most recent union sought village intervention.
Authorities affirmed that the situation remains under control and that the law will be upheld. Sarpanch Rattan Singh declared that the assembly sought to send a clear message to youngsters about the social fallout of defying community guidelines. Meanwhile, Hisar SP Siddhant Jain affirmed that police intervention was not immediately required, as the bride’s parents informed officials that they had no intention of interfering with the couple’s choice. Similar resolutions against same-village, same-gotra, or neighboring-village marriages have surfaced in nearby districts like Jind, reflecting ongoing discussions over customary norms across the region.
