Trump indicates possible Iranian involvement after passengers subdue attacker on Tel Aviv-bound jet

by TheReportingTimes

WASHINGTON, OCT 2 — Investigations are under way across the Middle East following a violent attempt by an Omani copilot to crash a commercial airliner carrying 182 people to Tel Aviv, prompting US President Donald Trump to issue a direct warning to Tehran.

Addressing the media at the White House on Thursday, President Trump declared that the US would retaliate forcefully if evidence shows Iran was connected to the suspect who attacked the captain mid-flight. Trump declared that Tehran would face severe repercussions, stating that US agencies are currently evaluating intelligence surrounding the airborne attack.

The assault occurred aboard a FlyDubai Boeing 737 Max 8 en route from the UAE to Israel. The suspect stabbed the flight commander, causing the aircraft to plummet thousands of feet in moments and sending out automated hijacking signals. The bloodied captain succeeded in opening the security door, enabling passengers and off-duty training pilots to enter the cockpit, fight off the copilot, and pull the aircraft out of a sharp dive that tore away part of the plane’s rudder.

The vessel was landed safely in Saudi Arabia, where emergency medical care was provided to the injured commander, Capt. Smit Machchhar. The suspect was taken into custody by Saudi authorities before being turned over to Emirati officials, who hold primary legal jurisdiction over the registered aircraft.

Israeli intelligence officials have joined regional authorities in Saudi Arabia to assist with interrogations. Regional officials declared that all possibilities, ranging from mental health issues to coordinated ideological terrorism, remain under active investigation. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu affirmed that Israeli agencies are coordinating closely with the UAE and international partners, though he maintained it is premature to assign responsibility to external powers.

The dramatic incident comes amidst heightened military readiness in the region, with the Pentagon dispatching nearly 9,000 troops aboard naval vessels toward the Middle East. Despite the escalation in rhetoric, international mediators are continuing discreet talks with involved governments to prevent further disruption to international shipping lanes and broader regional stability.
