Power Disruption announced for Punjab Cities

Modernization of electricity grid leads to 10-hour daily cuts in several districts

by TheReportingTimes

Mohali, April 22: A series of prolonged power outages has begun across Punjab as the state’s power utility moves forward with a wide-scale project to modernize the electricity distribution system. The Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) affirmed that residents in Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Bathinda, and Patiala should expect daily disruptions through April 26. These outages are expected to persist for up to 10 hours in some areas, primarily during the daytime.

The outages arrive just as the state enters a period of high thermal stress. Meteorological experts have declared a yellow alert for the coming days, warning that a heatwave will push mercury levels toward the 40°C mark. The convergence of infrastructure work and rising temperatures has raised concerns regarding the public’s ability to cope with the heat without consistent access to cooling systems.

Authorities maintained that the current work is vital for the long-term reliability of the state’s power supply. On the matter of the disruption, PSPCL representatives stated that the schedule is designed to facilitate infrastructure upgrades. They declared that despite the inconvenience, these steps are required to ensure the distribution system can handle the increasing load in the months ahead.

The disruption varies by district, with Mohali scheduled for cuts from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm on April 23 and 24. In Patiala, residents will face six-hour outages starting at 10 am during the same period. Industrial sectors in Bathinda, such as the Jodhpur village area and various industrial roads, are also slated for specific downtime on April 24. Officials asserted that the staggered nature of the plan aims to manage the workload efficiently while keeping the public informed of the specific windows of unavailability.
