Brief Ten-Minute Sitting Marks First Day of Punjab Assembly Session

Opposition Raises Inclusion Demands During Obituary References Before Friday Adjournment

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, Oct 22: Proceedings for the newly convened six-day Punjab Vidhan Sabha session were brought to a swift close on Thursday, lasting only ten minutes before Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan announced the next sitting for Friday. The abrupt adjournment occurred right after the House honored several prominent figures and recent tragedy victims during official obituary references.

During the brief session, legislators observed moments of remembrance for individuals including former minister Chuni Lal Bhagat, former MP Varinder Singh Bajwa, and multiple community figures. Controversy arose when Congress members insisted that the obituary list be expanded to include anti-drug campaigner Bikramjit Singh and local resident Gulzar Singh, though the plea was bypassed by the assembly leadership.

With formal introductions out of the way, the assembly is projected to witness fierce political battles in the coming days. State legislators are bracing for high-stakes debates concerning public safety, graft allegations, and the administrative handling of the state’s drug crisis. While opposition factions target the ruling executive over accountability, administration representatives maintain that systemic narcotics challenges stem from past governance failures and central border security gaps.
