Carcas, June 25: The number of fatalities has climbed to 164 in Venezuela after the country was battered by consecutive 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes. Local authorities have warned that the current figures represent an initial count, with thousands still believed to be trapped beneath flattened buildings.
The seismic event, which struck on Wednesday evening, has compromised infrastructure and disrupted communication networks across multiple states. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez asserted that the administration expects the death toll to rise significantly as search-and-rescue operations penetrate remote and heavily affected sectors. The government is managing the crisis amidst existing economic challenges and has initiated a $200 million recovery fund to jumpstart reconstruction.
According to data compiled by the US Geological Survey, the twin quakes originated in Yaracuy state, striking just 40 seconds apart. The rapid sequence prevented residents from evacuating safely, creating what survivors described as scenes of absolute devastation. Experts noted that the second 7.5 magnitude shock prolonged the intense shaking, compounding the damage to already weakened structures.
International aid has begun mobilizing to assist the local emergency crews. United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that rescue operations and humanitarian assets are being dispatched immediately to assist Venezuelan recovery teams on the ground.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also offered deep condolences to the victims and their families on behalf of his nation. He affirmed that India prays for the speedy recovery of the injured and stands firmly in solidarity with Venezuela, remaining prepared to offer any necessary support as the critical search operations continue.
