Faridkot jail authorities seize 23 mobile devices

Overcrowding and staff shortages hinder surveillance at high-security facility

by TheReportingTimes

FARIDKOT, APRIL 26 — A massive search operation at the Faridkot Modern Jail led to the recovery of 23 mobile phones over a two-day period, ending Saturday night. The latest seizures follow a trend of frequent contraband discoveries at the facility, where more than 500 prohibited communication devices have been confiscated in the last year alone.

Police sources stated that the prison is currently operating at 35 percent above its intended capacity, which complicates efforts to monitor high-risk inmates. Officials affirmed that the presence of dozens of gangsters and smugglers makes the security situation particularly critical. A senior police officer asserted that the sheer number of phones found indicates that the prison walls have become effectively porous for communication.

The illegal entry of these phones is attributed to items being tossed over the high outer walls and potential involvement by internal staff. Jail officials mentioned that they are currently struggling with limited duty staff, which prevents comprehensive oversight of the barracks. They declared that without more robust staffing and updated security technology, dismantling internal networks remains a significant hurdle.

All recovered devices have been handed over to the cyber cell for detailed forensic investigation. Authorities affirmed that while formal cases have been registered, the ongoing issue of mobile phone access within the “safe” confines of the prison requires an immediate systemic overhaul to prevent inmates from operating with perceived impunity.
