Mohali, July 6: Top leaders within the Punjab Congress have closed ranks to mount a formal challenge against the leadership of state chief Amarinder Raja Warring. A series of closed-door consultations culminated in a significant gathering in Mohali, where the state’s political heavyweights agreed to collectively voice their resistance to Warring’s ongoing tenure as the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president.
The timing of the meeting carries significant political weight, transpirating just prior to a scheduled visit by AICC general secretary Bhupesh Baghel to Ludhiana. The internal opposition has been building momentum over the past two days, driven by a coalition that includes Partap Singh Bajwa, Charanjit Singh Channi, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, and Pargat Singh, all of whom are seeking to influence the central high command’s upcoming assessment.
The unfolding situation took a highly public turn when the attending leaders distributed a joint photograph on social media to confirm their alliance. While Warring subsequently shared images from the event on his own digital platforms in an apparent bid to project internal cohesion, his noticeable absence from the primary group photograph raised further questions about his standing among the senior leadership.
The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief pushed back against assertions of an internal coup, maintaining that the discussions were standard organizational procedures intended to streamline upcoming campaign efforts.
“This was a meeting to discuss the party’s strategy for the Punjab Assembly elections, and it was not a meeting of any camp,” Warring asserted.
Party insiders state that despite the public assertions of unity, the coordinated actions of the state’s senior line-up indicate a deep-seated desire for structural changes that the central leadership will now have to address during their field assessment.
